Two-Phase Refrigerant Based Small Satellite Propulsion System: Safety Analysis and Implementation
نویسندگان
چکیده
The design of small satellite propulsion systems is often a constant struggle to balance two opposing requirements: system performance and system safety. Cold gas thruster systems utilizing the refrigerant R-134a as a two-phase propellant have the potential to meet both the performance goals and safety requirements. This paper delineates a safety analysis for a general R-134a-based propulsion system and the implementation of the safety criteria to a satellite being developed by the UMR SAT program.

Evaluation of a Dual-Fluid Cold-Gas Thruster Concept
A new dual-fluid concept was studied that could eventually find application for cold-gas propulsion for small space satellites or other constant flow applications. In basic form, the concept uses two different refrigerant working fluids, each having a different saturation vapor pressure. The higher vapor pressure refrigerant remains in the saturation phase and is used to pressurize the lower sa...

متن کاملDevelopment of a Warm-Gas Butane System for Microsatellite Propulsion
Satellite propulsion systems are typically complex and costly, and require extensive ground support equipment and personnel to implement. While these systems may be feasible for large commercial or government programs to execute, they are impractical for microand nano-satellite systems. In particular, these small spacecraft cannot utilize classical hazardous or high-pressure components, as smal...
